Default Shoulders

hey guys, i wanted to get an opinion on a certain exercise. I know that some people, and all the old school BB did the behind the neck shoulder barbell presses. Ive heard that the movement itself is very hard on the shoulder and puts great strain on the shoulders, etc. I know people that still do this exercise though and just do fairly light weight, they said its a great shoulder builder and makes for a very round and solid shoulder appearance. What is you guys insight on this exercise?????

Dumbbells! Barbell's 2 hard on the joints. Gr8 exercise IMO.

I personally love the exercise. Just use caution and have someone lift the weight off for you. But DB's are a safer bet.

ive always done dumbells my whole career. Ive done some some barbell also but using a smith. I just have heard people say that the behind the neck is great for building the shoulders up. I have a friend thats a physical therapist and he said its very bad for the joints, etc though

i always do behind the head military presses on smith machine almost every shoulder workout, just dont go super heavy which is bad for rotator cuffs (always warm up and stretch on shoulder and chest day especially). they are a great overall shoulder movement and hit rear delts good too. of course dont forget to do dumbbell shoulder presses as well. i've heard Jay Cutler say time and time again that "if you want big shoulders, start with side raises". having you some rounder and wider shoulders also makes your back look wider and waist smaller

I cant fuck with behind neck presses or lat pulldowns behind neck due to compressed disks. I saw Ed Coan do a clean 415 single behind the neck press years ago WTF. Dumbells for me or smith machine changing up every 6-8 weeks

I always do behind neck press to start shoulders but warm up with light weight first two sets & prefer to pick up from the floor, then move on to bent over side lat raise then all the normal stuff after, shoulders have come on a treat do it if you can:-) I don't do this much weight tho lol

nice workout, but I would start with the overhead presses first or I will end up hitting myself in the head if I put them later on during the workout lol

its not a natural momement and therefore with heavy weights will EVENTUALLY give problems to All ...............done with a light weight is fine i suppose but why risk injury with any unatural movement

I alternate behind the neck press(always on the smith), front presses, and dumbells. I also do alot of rotator cuff excercises and stretches so I feel fairly safe about it

I think it really comes down to the individual as to how good they are.

All I have to say is be careful with behind the neck presses as they can fuck some people up. However, there are some people (such as myself) who really benefits from behind the neck presses and they just feel natural and comfortable. It all comes down to your individual physiology I guess. One example of someone who swears by them is Kevin Levrone, according to him they are the best shoulder builders and he goes heavy on them too lol.

Start light and play it by ear. If it doesn't feel right, then I prob wouldn't do them.

Just my 2c.

Bump CD. Barbells will mess you up eventually. Personally, I do very heavy dumbbells AND high reps (10 min). You have a lot of years of lifting ahead of you. Treat your body well. Good luck bro.
