Team BDU asked me to write this article on Old School Mentality as it pertains to the new Millennium. I sat and thought about this for a long while, and my apologizes to them, but that cannot be summed up in one article. What I can do is give you some observations that I have noticed throughout my years in the weight room.
To me, the weight room is a journey, rife with passages as one is allowed to place more weight on the bar. Yes, technology has given us machines that can work every part of our body effectively, but I feel as though people have forgotten that weightlifting is 80% mental and 40% physical. It’s true, one could use machines to truly develop the “bow-flex” body that seems to be all the rage these days, but does that really tell how mentally tough you are? Picture 45′s on each side lined up like soldiers, the weight crushing down on you, threatening to break you, even kill you; and you move it because you had the brass balls to load the bar so heavy and now you have no choice. This is the scenario, I face daily in the weight-room. I consider myself a Power builder., which is one who recognizes the benefits of both religions. Bodybuilding, in my opinion, is a beauty contest. And in beauty contests there is a talent portion of the competition. Should “X” competitor win over “Y” because he is bigger, event though “Y” competitor can move more weight? I think not. Now, let’s look at the other school. Powerlifting is an awesome sport, yet you have shirts, and suits, and wraps, and so forth. Does this equipment truly allow one to measure his true maximum weight potential? Again I disagree. There is also the aspect that these men can lift 800 lb. Atlas stones, yet can’t run one hundred yards with our becoming winded. Is this a true representation of fitness? Despite their obvious deficiencies, these disciplines have much to offer in the way of knowledge. Bodybuilding exudes form. One’s technique must be perfect in order to affect the desired muscles. Powerlifting is all about how much weight you can handle. Low rep ranges, and perfect timing are critical so that one can stay with in their “power band”. Mixing these two disciplines (and a lot of other stuff) can truly turn the average lifter into something out of a DC/Marvel Comic book. If I had to give you one takeaway point from this; I would caution you not to submit to the modern “bitchassness” that this world is seeming to migrate to. If you grab your balls and lace up your boots, you might just get to where you are going. Quitting is unacceptable To dominate one must be physically, mentally, and spiritually stronger than their opponent. Then, domination is guaranteed. Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be this fukin hard either! If im a danger to myself just think what the fuck I can do to you! Last edited by powerman; 01-22-2011 at 07:36 PM. |
