I can't really speak for you but first thing is determine if you can structurally squat. If so then 5-8 sets of squats done once a week is all you need.... if not then you have to find an alternative maybe it's deads or hacks or one legged leg presses till you get leg strength even.... I would stay away from the machine work till your legs are equal. Stick to basic leg exercises and push yourself hard. I see so many peeps not push their legs past failure because it hurts too much don't be a pussy train hard and you will grow!

    Bump Gman

I would also do extra sets of leg extensions on your weak leg until it catches up. lunges is another great leg exercise.

always start with a bunch of leg extensions to pre exhaust your quads and to warm up your knees. and do squats LAST, you will be in for a surprise.

Maybe start with lunges on a smith for extra stability?

Bump Crazed on the pre-exhaust. That's exactly how Nilsa (my former trainer) had me train legs. I also do Hammy curls before squating. Also do your squatting on a smith machine with your feet planted slightly in front of you so as your knees never extend over or on top your feet it puts far less stress on the knees.

Use knee wraps, those will really help with the pain. I have to wrap on heavy leg press and squat sets, or I can't get thru my working sets.

I agree what the others are saying, you gotta blast your legs hard every time if u want them to grow.

Here's what my leg day has been like lately:
    Warmup/stretch
Front squats: 1x12 bump the weight and do 2x10
    Back Squats: 3x10
    Smith lunges: 3x15 (each leg)
    Prone leg curls: 3x15
1 leg extensions: super set 18+15+12 reps for one set per leg
    1 leg curls: 3x15

That might be too much if you haven't worked legs real hard in a while, but it definitely makes it hard for me to walk for a cpl days after.

I just do a ton of back squats, box squats, leg press, leg extensions. Genetically I've always had tree trunks for legs so I can't really give you a personal success story, but this seems to work for me. Also, leg days are always my longest workout day. I spend 2 hours at the gym (too long, I know, but I talk a lot).

If you're having knee problems, you can try front squats and see if the positioning is more comfortable. Personally, I can't do them because I really bad wrists.

My legs are lacking due to constant injuries and terrible knees. It's depressing.

My legs are scrony too. I train them hard but they remain too long. Now I have recovered from a torn miniscus, so I am a bit leary to hit them hard.
