I say bad idea, cause it can bloat you especially if your using premixed crap from the store. I would stick with BCAA's 10g pre workout and 10g during.

Taking protien causes water to be drawn from circulation (water shifts from plasma and tissues to the stomach and intestines) to dilute and digest the protiens into the individual amino acids. Every amino acid molecule has to attach to a water molecule when it is broken down from the larger protien. The water molecules are released after metabolism is complete (up to several hours) So you get bloated and your plasma is temporarily dehydrated when you consume a large amount of protien....result: you can't work out to your max.

lafbear, is that possibly when i consume a large amount of protein, i feel sluggish and tired??? Ive asked a few people that in the past, and they didnt have an answer for it. Ive tried to tell people if i take in large amounts of protein daily, as in 350 and over, i feel more tired etc and just not right than i do with a lower dose. I know i need to be consuming a large amount to grow to my maximum potential, its just hard when everyday i do i feel like absolute shit.....

That is very possible. I eat big, high protein meals and have the same thing happen unless I drink a lot of fluids with the protein. If you take in a large amount of water when you eat the protein, you will still feel bloated but you won't be dehydrating your plasma. You can also take enzymes with the meal which will help things get absorbed faster so you don't feel bloated very long and then you will just piss out or sweat out the extra water you took in.

I can tell you what works for me: I eat a very high protein meal (about 60% P, 20% F and 20% C, plus digestive enzymes) about two hours before and I drink a lot of fluids with the meal and after the meal. Years ago, I would take amino acids in quantity right before workouts, then drink recovery drinks after...but I'm not as hard-core about working out as back then. The amino acids are ready to absorb and metabolize...as opposed to protein which has to be broken down into the individual aminos before use.

just a tidbit of trivia: The first vitamins discovered were a couple of amino acids. They called them "vital amines" because they were essential and could not be produced by the body. "Vital amines" was shortened to "vitamins".

Without enough protein in the body, muscle mass will not increase. During your weightlifting and strength training workout, your muscles are getting broken ...

Well i would state its bad idea. There is not good use and effect of protein drink of any health drink during work out. Only luke warm water would be helpful. Also you can drink milk after or protein shake after completion of workout.

I consume 2 scoops of whey mixed in with a up and 1-1/2 cups of oatmeal and 16oz skim milk 1 to 1-1/2 hrs pre workout. then 2 scopps of whey mixed with 8oz skim milk about 30 min post workout. Each time mixing/taking 4500mgs of BCAA's and 5000mg of glutimine. (not my idea but Nilsa insists). Nothing but water during training. BTW: 2 scoops of the whey I'm using is 40grams of protien.

BTW: Welcome home WW! You've been missed around here
