I have'nt really looked into protein powders over the last few years cause I've always brought the same brand (body science whey isolate)....... but I remember that there's protein isolate powders & protein concentrate powders, the concentrate powders are a bit cheaper but you get less absorbsion than the isolate powders.
So if you have one shake of 50 grams isolate powder your body will absorbe alot more of the protein than if it were 50 grams of concentrate powder. |

I buy liquid pasteurized egg whites from Kroger. I think they are called Kroger Break Free Egg Whites. You can buy (3) containers of them for $5 with a Kroger Plus Card. Each container has 50 grams of egg protein. I mix them with equal parts of non fat chocolate milk. Easy on the stomach, no gas or bloating.

I order from Trueprotein.com or get ON whey locally, but prices are getting jacked up $5-$10 a bag, so I'm going to only order from TP.

Optimally, you should utilize two different pwders in addition to you whole foods.
-Whey proteins, when mixed with water, can be absorbed in less than an hour. Isolates have better absorbtion and better taste, but are more expensive than whey concentrates. Whey should be taken first thing in the morning, an hour before workout, and immediately after workout. They are many lactose-free versions for those who cannot tolerat lactose. -Casseine, egg, and micellar casseine are all more of a "timed-release' protein base. They filter into the blood stream in anywhere from 2-6 hours, depending on the type, fat and fiber content, and what they are mixed with (water, juice, or milk). These are best between meals and especially before bed to slowly fed the body during the night, when most building and recovery are completed. Soy can also be in this category. |

As an endurance cyclist and triathlete, I have tried various protein mixes. New studies show by adding carbs to the protein drink, protein gets absorbed much more efficiently. Now this doesn't mean simple sugars from ice cream, soda, cake, or other. Here is what I use: 1/2-1 scoop of henrys bulk soy protein powder, and 1/2-1 scoop bio chem whey. Mix in a blender with some frozen fresh fruit and fruit juice. Its a great smoothie with two types of proteins that absorb at different rates(soy: slow absorb, whey quick absorb). Don't spend a lot of protein powders........I used to and found this to work better!
p.s-dont buy the already made protein drinks in a can. Those are filled with so many chemicals and preservatives. Plus, they dont have the correct carb/protein ratio to provide good absorbtion. |
