Default Whatman ? Millipore? PVDF question.

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask for your kind reply on the following.

This must be a difficult problem for most people.

I have been using whatman 0.45um GD/X filter and it takes me an hour to get it to 100ml.

I feel pain in my hand as I have to be pressing it with my hand continously.

In the forum it was said that it can be filtered fast and easily if Millipore Stericup Complete Filter Units with Durapore PVDF Membranes is used.

I want to get my hands to rest even though it is going to cost me much.

The product is in the link below.

May I ask you whether Millipore makes it possible to filter automatically using a pump?

And are Whatman 0.45 and Millipore the same PVDF filter?

Is it all right to use Millipore instead of Whatman 0.45? They are the same PVDF, but will not it do any harm? Is there anything that I have to be cautious about?

I would like to purchase Millipore 0.45um 250ml and will I be able to filter 250ml at a time?

I will really be looking forward to hearing from you as it is a very important matter for me.

I ask for your favor!

that link only shows you the filter itself.. Yes they can and are used instead of syring filters
But you need either the hand pump with the air lines or your Stericup filter is all but useless

Default stericup

I use 150ml stericup units with a vaccum pump. Case of 12 stericups $70 and hand vaccum pump around $36. I have run 300mls thru a sigle unit with no problems. What you need to be very careful with is staying sterile during the transfer from the receiver to your vial.

Amazon.com: Millipore SCGVU01RE Hydrophilic PVDF Stericup-GV Bottletop Filter Unit, Radio-Sterilized, 0.22?m Pore Size, 150mL Funnel Capacity (Pack of 12): Industrial & Scientific

Amazon.com: Millipore Stericup Sterile Vacuum Filter Units, Funnel 150mL, Receiver 150mL, Pore 0.45um, PVDF (Pack of 12): Industrial & Scientific

I see people posting links so Im hoping this is okay. I dont work for amazon or any of there sellers these are just the best deals Ive found. Please let me know if putting this up is not allowed. If they dont show up as links its because my computer skills are weak at best and you can copy and paste them.

or use a caulk gun to assist your current method. Still takes time but no hand strain.

FYI if you are straining with sterility as the main goal you need to use the .22um filter, the .45um does NOT remove all bacteria. The caulking gun works fine, but it does take time and you would need 2-3 filters to complete the job as they plug quite quickly. For small batches of gear the syringe filters are still the best bet IMO as little or no gear is wasted. The stericup filters are indeed excellent but 5-6 ml is wasted even if you run oil through them at the end, the star design of the actual filter makes it tough to get oil from the outer fingers IMO.

Good info. I always wondered how much oil was retained in the vacuum filters.
